Devenir de l'atrazine dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron. Approche par la modélisation hydrodynamique, hydrosédimentaire et biogéochimique ArchiMer
Vanhoutte Brunier, Alice.
Atrazine is the most widely used herbicide on cultured areas. This pesticide is degraded during its transport in rivers and streams, to the coastal area. Marennes Oléron is the main french oyster farming area, receiving the fresh water from the Charente river and ail the drainage coming from the coastal cultivated marshlands. Agriculture is thus claimed to be responsible for shellfish mortality in the aquaculture area. To simulate the changing fate of atrazine in the environment, a modelling strategy has been selected. a) First, using a two-way hydrodynamic model developped by IFREMER, the atrazine dilution trail in the Marennes Oléron area was simulated.Combined with larvae bioassays of Crassostrea gigas (Japanese oyster), the results show atrazine rates...

Direct effect of p,p'- DDT on mice liver BJPS
Arroyo-Salgado,Bárbara; Olivero-Verbel,Jesús; Guerrero-Castilla,Angélica.
ABSTRACT Contact with the pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p′-DDT) can be the cause of various harmful effects in humans, wildlife, and the environment. This pesticide is known to be persistent, lipophilic, resistant to degradation, and bioaccumulive in the environment and to be slowly released into bloodstream. Growing evidence shows that exposure to DDT is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Individuals exposed to elevated levels of DDT and its metabolite have an increased prevalence of diabetes and insulin resistance. To evaluate these possible relationships, experiments were performed on eight-week-old female mice, divided into three groups (n = 10 per group): Group 1 received a vehicle-control intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of sesame...

Diversification strategies in the pesticide industry: from seeds to biopesticides Ciência Rural
Pelaez,Victor; Mizukawa,Gabriel.
ABSTRACT: The pesticide industry has undergone a diversification process led by six leading companies (Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dow, DuPont, BASF) that control roughly 68% of the world market. This growth, initiated in the second half of the 1990s, occurred through deals and acquisitions of companies from the seed and biopesticide markets. This paper analyzes these diversification strategies, which have involved a capital mobilization process based on the exploitation of economies of scope and management of complementary assets. This aims to minimize the risks of investment in consolidated markets as well as in new ones.

Do Farmers Internalise External Impacts of Pesticides in Production? AgEcon
Skevas, Theodoros; Stefanou, Spiro E.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
In modern agriculture, pesticides feature so prominently in growers’ arsenal to reduce crop damage caused by various pests and diseases. But their indiscriminate use can harm human health and the environment and, eventually, impact agricultural productivity negatively. In an era of an increasing public awareness on the external effects of pesticides, the EU is trying to update its pesticide policy by establishing tax and levy schemes. An important question is whether the external impacts of pesticides are also affecting the farmers’ production environment. A damage abatement specification is used consisting of a potential output function and a damage abatement function. The damage abatement function considers both high and low toxicity pesticides, and...

Does It Matter Who Scouts? AgEcon
Lichtenberg, Erik; Berlind, Ayesha Velderman.
Scouting is the most widely used integrated pest management technique adopted by U.S. growers. This study applies an implicit demand formulation of the Lichtenberg-Zilberman damage abatement model to data from a survey of Maryland field crop growers to examine differences in pesticide demand between growers using scouts trained and supervised by extension and those using chemical dealer employees or scouting themselves. The results give partial support to those skeptical of the quality of scouting by farmers themselves and by consultants working for chemical dealers. Soybean growers using extension-trained scouts had significantly lower pesticide demand than those using chemical dealer employees or scouting themselves. However, no significant differences...

Droplets spectrum of air-assisted boom sprayers under different environmental and operational conditions AGRIAMBI
Sasaki,Robson S.; Teixeira,Mauri M.; Fernandes,Haroldo C.; Zolnier,Sérgio; Maciel,Christiam F. S.; Alvarenga,Cleyton B. de.
ABSTRACT During pesticide spraying, the psychrometric conditions of the air may cause evaporation of the droplets along their trajectory from the nozzle to the target. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of air psychrometric conditions and operating pressure on the droplet spectrum of air-assisted boom sprayers. The test was performed using a prototype equipped with an axial fan, a flow homogenizer, temperature and relative air humidity sensors, a spray nozzle and a gas-heating system to warm up the airflow. With the assembled system and the aid of a particle analyser, the JSF 11002 spray nozzle was evaluated with respect to droplet spectrum in four air psychrometric conditions (7, 14, 21 and 28 hPa) and at four operating pressures (200, 300, 400...

Effect of in vivo pesticide exposure and injection of bacteria on immune gene expression in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Gagnaire, Beatrice; Renault, Tristan; Thomas Guyon, Hélène; Burgeot, Thierry.
Bay of Marennes-Oleron is an important French area of reproduction for sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. This area is often subjected to many pollutions due to anthropic activities, including pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) which cause adverse effects in aquatic organisms. The harmful effects of such contaminants on fish immune system leading to a decreased resistance against pathogens begin to be described, but remain poorly known. In this context, influence of micropolluants, like PAH, on the defense mechanisms developed by sea bass was tested. Fish were exposed five days to a soluble fraction of PAH with environmental concentration (760 ng/L). At the end of the contamination, fish were transferred to non contaminated sea water and...

Effect of Irrigation Levels on Dissolved Organic Carbon Soil Distribution and the Depth Mobility of Chlorpyrifos Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Junod,Julio; Zagal,Erick; Sandoval,Marco; Barra,Ricardo; Vidal,Gladys; Villarroel,Mario.
Water flows provided by irrigation systems may be associated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in the soil solution and may modify the mobility of pesticides, such as chlorpyrifos (CHP). These compounds were analyzed under field conditions, evaluating their distribution in the soil profile under excessive irrigation in a Humic Haploxerand soil. The trial was carried out in soil columns located under the canopy of apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh.) in an orchard located in the Bío-Bío Region, Chile. The insecticide CHP was applied 120 g hL-1, and later the natural run off was collected from the foliage to the columns. Surface irrigation was used as a control, the equivalent to 4 L h-1 weekly, plus two treatments over the columns of 6 and 8 L h-1...

Effets d'un mélange de pesticides sur les hémocytes d'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas. ArchiMer

Shellfish industry is often realised in estuarine areas, subjected to pollutions due to agricultural activities. The harmful effects of pesticides on animals inhabiting these estuarine zones are poorly documented. Bivalve molluscs represent an interesting model because they are sedentary and they filter water intensively. Effects of pesticides on haemocytes functions were tested in Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas and analysed by flow cytometry. A combination of pesticide at environmental concentrations was tested in vivo. Animals used corresponded to two genetically selected populations produced in hatchery.

Eficiência comparativa de inseticidas no controle das pragas do arroz armazenado no Estado do Acre. Infoteca-e
FAZOLIN, M..
No controle dessas pragas alguns...

Environmentally Adjusted Agricultural Productivity in the Great Plains AgEcon
Rezek, Jon P.; Perrin, Richard K..
This study adjusts 1960-1996 agricultural productivity gains in a panel of Great Plains states to account for the discharge of pesticide and nitrogen effluents into the environment. The agricultural-environmental technology is approximated with translog distance functions that allow us to contrast traditional versus environmentally adjusted productivity gains. Findings indicate technical change has been increasingly biased toward environmentally friendly production. While the environmental adjustment reduced overall productivity gains during the sample period, in recent years adjusted productivity outpaced the traditional measure, reflecting the pro-environment bias in technical change.

Esterase profile in a pyrethroid-resistant Brazilian strain of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus (Acari, Ixodidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Baffi,Milla Alves; Pereira,Cícero Donizete; Souza,Guilherme Rocha Lino de; Bonetti,Ana Maria; Ceron,Carlos Roberto; Gourlart,Luiz Ricardo.
The cattle tick Boophilus microplus causes great damage in livestock and is considered one of the most important tropical ectoparasites. The traditional method of control is based on the intensive use of pesticides, however the indiscriminate use of these compounds over the years has led to the selection of resistant ticks. Hydrolases, particularly esterases (EST), have been reported to be associated with acaricide resistance in B. microplus. We compared the esterase profile of susceptible and cypermethrin-resistant strains of adult B. microplus and a pyrethroid susceptible reference strain (the Mozzo strain) using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and specific staining. The electrophoretic profiles of protein extracts revealed the presence of four...

ESTIMATING INSECTICIDE APPLICATION FREQUENCIES: A COMPARISON OF GEOMETRIC AND OTHER COUNT DATA MODELS AgEcon
Hubbell, Bryan J..
The number of insecticide applications made by an apple grower to control an insect infestation is modeled as a geometric random variable. Insecticide efficacy, rate per application, month of treatment, and method of application all have significant impacts on the expected number of applications. The number of applications to control a given insect population is dependent on the probability of achieving successful control with a given application. Results suggest that northeastern growers have the highest and mid-Atlantic growers the lowest probability of controlling an infestation with a given application. Results also indicate that scales require the least and moths the most number of applications. Growers are not responsive to per unit insecticide...
